Key facts

  • Free, no sign-up — the countdown runs in your browser and updates every second.
  • Smart units: years, months and weeks for far dates; days, hours, minutes and seconds in the last week.
  • Uses your browser's time zone by default; pick any IANA time zone instead.
  • When the chosen time zone differs from yours, it also shows the target in your local time.
  • Daylight-saving changes and leap years are counted correctly.
  • Share a countdown link that keeps the date, time, time zone and event name.

How to Use the Time Until Calculator

  1. Pick the date. Choose the day you are counting down to. The countdown starts right away and updates every second.
  2. Add a time if it matters. Leave the time empty to count to the start of the day, or set an exact time such as 6:30 PM for a flight, a launch or a deadline.
  3. Check the time zone. The calculator uses your browser's time zone by default. Pick another zone when the event happens somewhere else; the result then also shows the moment in your own local time.
  4. Name your event (optional). Type a name such as "Our wedding" so the result reads "Time until Our wedding".
  5. Copy or share. Copy the result as text, or copy a countdown link that opens the same date, time and time zone for anyone you send it to.

About the Time Until Calculator

The Time Until Calculator answers one question: how long until a date? It shows a live countdown that picks the most useful units for the distance. A date more than a year away reads in years, months and days. A date a few months away reads in months, weeks and days. Within a week the countdown switches to days, hours, minutes and seconds, so the last stretch is exact.

Months and years follow the calendar in the time zone you choose, so a countdown from January 31 to March 1 is 1 month and 1 day. Days, hours, minutes and seconds are real elapsed time, so a daylight-saving change between now and the target shows up as one more or one less hour instead of being hidden. Below the countdown you also get the same distance in total days, hours, minutes and seconds.

Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. To measure the time between two past or future dates, use the Date Difference Calculator. To convert a meeting time between cities, try the World Time Zone Converter, and for a short countdown in minutes use the Timer and Stopwatch.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I find out how long until a date?

Pick the date in the calculator. The countdown starts at once and shows the time left in the most useful units, plus totals in days, hours, minutes and seconds. Add a time if you need the countdown to an exact moment.

How many days until Christmas?

Click the Christmas button under Quick countdowns. The calculator counts down to midnight at the start of December 25 in your time zone and shows the days, hours and minutes left. After Christmas it switches to next year's date.

Why does the countdown show months and weeks instead of hours?

The calculator picks units that fit the distance. Months and weeks are easier to read for dates far away. When the date is less than a week away, it shows days, hours, minutes and seconds. The totals line always shows the exact number of hours and seconds.

Which time zone does the countdown use?

It uses your browser's time zone by default. You can choose any other time zone from the list. When the chosen zone is different from yours, the result also shows the target moment in your local time.

Can I count down to a specific time, not just a date?

Yes. Enter a time in the optional time field, for example 9:00 AM. If you leave the time empty, the countdown runs to the start of the day (12:00 AM).

Does the countdown handle daylight saving time and leap years?

Yes. Months and years follow the real calendar, including February 29 in leap years. Hours and seconds are real elapsed time, so a daylight-saving change before the target adds or removes one hour from the countdown.

What happens when the date has passed?

The heading changes to "Time since" and the counter shows how long ago the date was. If you are watching when the countdown reaches zero, it shows "It's time!".

Can I share my countdown?

Yes. Click "Copy countdown link". The link keeps the date, the time, the time zone and the event name, so the person who opens it sees the same countdown to the same moment.

Tips for Using the Time Until Calculator

  • Events in another city: Set the time zone of the place where the event happens, not your own. The result shows when that is in your local time.
  • Deadlines: Many deadlines end at 11:59 PM. Enter that time so the countdown does not end a day early.
  • Birthdays and anniversaries: Name the event and copy the link to share the countdown. For an exact age, use the Age Calculator.
  • Live events and launches: Keep the page open. In the last week the countdown shows seconds, and it shows "It's time!" at zero.
  • Focus sessions: For work blocks of 25 minutes, the Pomodoro Timer is a better fit than a date countdown.
